Second to last week of term and I'm flat out so this will be a rather briefish review but don't read anything into that - I love this album!
BTW I've been listening to my original CD version rather than expanded ones on Spotify. I've been trying to find a physical copy of the 10th anniversary version without success so far.
Background paragraph: Many years ago, when Samantha was studying at Victoria in Wellington she played me some songs from The Phoenix Foundation and I loved the sound and the band instantly. There's a lovely woozy, off kilter, dream pop, indie vibe going on that really appeals to me.
It's a well-produced (the vocals mix is really tops), confident sound on Buffalo which is what you'd expect from a band on their fourth album.
Best bits - Buffalo is a cracking song - my fav TPF track, Orange and Mango is a delight, Bitte Bitte stands out, Eventually.
Slight criticism - the sequencing is something that could be improved IMHO with the slowish start (Eventually is a terrific song but it doesn't feel right as the lead off song), then their best song Buffalo comes second, plus second two has a few songs that kinda get lost. Just sayin'.
Four stars for me (every song is not a masterpiece which is the criteria for 5) -so, flawed genius!
